I Was a Guest on the Community Podcast — Let's Talk About Brands You Can Actually Grow Into
I recently sat down with Kristina Bartold on her podcast, Community, and we spent 47 minutes talking about something I care about deeply: what it actually takes to build a brand and website you can grow into, instead of one you'll be rebuilding again in two years.
We covered a lot.
My journey from corporate art director to founding Roop Creative. Ten years of lessons. And the thing I keep coming back to in every conversation like this: strategic branding is so much more than picking colours, fonts, and a pretty logo.
Here's a taste of what we got into.
Why saying no is a growth strategy
One of the things I talked about is how saying no to the wrong opportunities is often what makes room for the right ones. It sounds counterintuitive when you're building a business and every yes feels like it matters. But the clients who aren't the right fit take up space, energy, and time that your actual dream clients need.
When DIY makes sense, and when it doesn't
We got honest about this one. DIY branding and websites absolutely have their place, especially in the earliest stages of a business. But there's a point where DIY starts costing you more than it's saving you, in missed inquiries, in a brand that doesn't match your current pricing, in a website that quietly repels the exact people you want to attract.
Your website's real job
Here's something I said that I'll keep saying: your website should be helping sell your business before someone ever books a discovery call. If it's not building trust and answering questions before that first conversation, it's not doing its job.
We also talked through the biggest website mistakes I see business owners make consistently, and why most of them come down to strategy, not design.
Building for your ideal client, not just your own taste
Your brand shouldn't be built around what you personally like. It should be built around what your ideal client actually needs to see, feel, and understand to trust you. Those two things aren't always the same, and that gap is where a lot of brands quietly lose potential clients.
A brand you grow into, not one you keep replacing
This is the heart of the whole conversation. How do you build a brand and website with enough strategy behind it that you expand into it over time, instead of tearing it down and starting over every couple of years? We talked through what that actually looks like in practice.
Personal branding, SEO, blogging, and funnels, strategically
We also got into how personal branding, SEO, blogging, and funnels should never be approached as a one-size-fits-all checklist. Each one should be chosen and used strategically, based on your actual business goals, not just because it's what everyone else is doing.
The psychology and the human element
Some of my favourite parts of this conversation were about the psychology behind branding, and how thoughtful website strategy and the human element work together to build real trust with potential clients. We talked about creating a customer journey that feels intentional from the very first touchpoint, showing up professionally online, and why your website needs to be so much more than a digital business card.
If you're building a service-based business, thinking about a rebrand, or wondering whether your website is actually attracting your dream clients, this episode will give you a longer-term lens to look at all of it through. 💗
