How To Write A Bio on Social Media

Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and LinkedIn are just a few of the social platforms where your bio is a MUST. This piece of your profile shouldn't be ignored or an afterthought. It's where your audience can connect with you and learn more. Kind of like your online business card!

Regardless of what platform you're using your bio needs to do the following 5 things:

  1. Explain who you are and what you do.

  2. Use language that speaks to your niche and dream clients.

  3. Have a call to action (links) that allow your audience to get more information about you and your service/product.

  4. Tell people your service location and how they can get in touch with you.

  5. Share your brand personality.

Now when writing your bio, on each platform, consider the tone and language style you want to set. Ask yourself:

  • What kind of brand personality do I want to showcase on this platform?

  • Do I want my profile to be informative, inspirational, fun, or all three?

  • What am I looking to gain from this profile? Followers? or Clients?

Setting the tone here sets the expectation for the audience as well.

You also want to consider the length associated with that particular bio. Pinterest and Instagram have limited space, so you really want to highlight who you are in a few words.

Start with an introductory line - that really gets down to business, but is fun and shares your persona. From there break down your accomplishments or the services/products you provide. It's also ok to use emojis to spice up the look and feel on fun platforms like Instagram and Pinterest.

Platforms like Facebook and Linkedin give you ample space so dive deeper into who you are, what your brand does and how it has helped others. Share your why, your history and provide details about your services/products.

Last but not least, most of these platforms allow for a call to action button or links. Don't forget to set those up as they can really push traffic on to your shop, website or blog!

BONUS TIP:

Did you know your name on your Instagram bio is searchable? This is different from your handle. My recommendation, change your name to describe your service/product and keep your handle as your business name!

For example, my Instagram handle is @roopcreativeagency however my name is Branding & Web Design Boutique, so when some searches branding and/or web design, I show up in their search!

Now get out there and write some killer bios that help you reach your goals.
