The 80:20 Rule
The 80:20 rule is simple, short and sweet. It also just so happens to be one of my favourite rules when it comes to social media management or content creation in general.
By definition, it means 80% of content should be personal, provide value and serve your readers/follower and 20% of content should focus on sales.
Let be real for a second, whether you like her, love her or are indifferent this rule has helped Kim Kardashian elevate her brand experience. See 80% of the content she shares is all about her lifestyle and every now and then she will introduce a product that sells out in seconds. She doesn't spend a great deal of time promoting this product but rather promotes her lifestyle and then talks about how certain products allows her to be who she is. It's a rule that has worked for many influencers.
But hey, we aren't all Kim K and don't want our lives showcased everywhere. That's ok! You can still follow the 80:20 rule.
Just refocus 80% of your content to be lifestyle-oriented and based on your brand personality. For me, this means empowering my followers with quotes, sharing stories of amazing business owners, educating them on ways to improve their business and brand strategy as well as sharing my self-care indulgence! All of this makes my brand and my business who it is. It creates value so much so that people know a large part of who I am and what I stand for before they even meet me.
That's not to say I don't have a private life with my husband that is hardly ever mentioned on any of my public profiles. You can share value without sharing every detail. That's where the magic happens!
Now that leaves the 20% chunk for me to focus on previous client work, and sharing my services.
We don't live in a world where pushy sales work - in fact, that only pushes potential clients away. Build value, gain trust and then share your service or product. Trust me it will do wonders!
